Egypt protests: Anti-Mubarak demonstrators arrested

About 700 people have been arrested throughout Egypt in a crackdown against anti-government protests, security officials say.  The arrests came as police clashed with protesters in two cities following Tuesday's unprecedented protests.

Egypt, the most populous country in the Arab world, erupted in mass protests on Jan. 25, 2011, after the uprisings in Tunisiainflamed Egypt’s smoldering grievances against the heavy-handed rule of its president, Hosni Mubarak. After 18 days of angry protests in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and after losing the support of the military and the United States, Mr. Mubarak resigned on Feb. 11, 2011, ending 30 years of autocratic rule, as the military stepped forward and pushed him from office.
